Astronaut Bruce McCandless II, mission specialist, participates in an extra-vehicular activity (EVA), a few meters away from the cabin of the shuttle Challenger. He is using a nitrogen-propelled hand-controlled Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU). He is performing this EVA without being tethered to the shuttle. The picture shows a cloud view of the earth in the background.

Edited by en:User:diliff. Reduced in size slightly as the original was quite large but soft - I figured that a reduction by approximately 33% would not impact on the resolvable detail, but would reduce the visibility of the noise in the image and decrease the file size significantly (previously 7mb!). Also ran it through a weak noise reduction and increased the contrast SLIGHTLY - I compared to the original and there is nothing blown out. The whites are just slightly less grey than before.
