Along the Icefields Parkway (Alberta 93) which connects Banff and Jasper National Parks, this is the one glacier that comes very close to the highway. Athabasca Glacier is just one component of the huge Columbia Icefields above these mountains, which straddle the Triple Continental Divide over Alberta and British Columbia, and whose waters end up flowing to the Pacific, the Atlantic (via Hudson Bay), AND the Arctic. When first explored in the 1840s, Athabasca Glacier was known to stretch all the way out to the parking lot I'm standing at. Global warming over the years caused the glacier to gradually retreat, and also lose much of its depth and volume. It is possible for visitors to hike to the base of the glacier, and with proper safety precautions, even walk on the glacier itself. But as the danger of falling into hidden crevasses is too great, for a casual visitor like me, the recommended journey onto the glacier would have to be made via a Brewster Company bus tour, which leaves from this parking lot. |
