Description
English: After his invasion in England in November 1688 William III led his army to London, forcing the powerless army of Jacob II ahead. Beginning January 1689 Jacob II fled to France. After William III and his wife Maria Stuart were crowned by the British Parliament on 13 March 1689, Mary left Brielle on 20 February 1689 to join her husband in England. This print by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708) depicts the arrival of Mary Stuart on the beach in Margate. On the background part of the accompanying Dutch Fleet can be seen. The princess - in the middle of the picture - walks with her train towards the coach waiting for her. Along the way she is welcomed by office holders.
