stic cavities due to softening andhemorrhage. They then resemble in appearancebenign, cystic chondrofibromas. They often form rapidly growing tumors whichdestroy the bones and joints and give rise to sarcoma-tous metastases containing no cartilage. Their prog-nosis is, therefore, very bad. In young individualsthey cause disturbance in growth (shortening, etc.).Spontaneous fractures are frequent in the formswhich show an abundant development of sarcomatoustissue and much cystic degeneration. In chondro-mas arising from cartilaginous exostoses, which, likethe chondromas of Virchoiv, are due to arrested de-velopment of the skeleton and disturbances in growth,chondrosarcomas may also develop. The tumors areso typical that they cannot be mistaken for otliergrowths. Fig. 34 shows a nodular tumor of almost bonyhardness arising from the tibia. Some portions ofthe tumor are soft.
