En février 1848, les classes commerçantes françaises construisirent des barricades à travers Paris pour protester contre l'absence de droits politiques et les difficultés causées par une longue crise économique. Au cours d'un incident devant le Ministère des Affaires étrangères, un soldat fit feu sur la foule, déclenchant une émeute. A la fin de février, Louis-Philippe avait pris la fuite et l'opposition avait formé un gouvernement provisoire. Le croquis provient de la collection militaire Anne S.K. Brown à la Bibliothèque de l'Université Brown, la plus importante collection américaine consacrée à l'histoire et à l'iconographie des soldats et à la vie militaire, et l'une des plus vastes collections au monde dédiée à l'étude des uniformes militaires et marins.

In February 1848, the French merchant classes erected barricades throughout Paris to protest their lack of political rights and the difficulties caused by an extended economic depression. In an incident outside the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a soldier fired into a crowd, inciting a riot. By the end of February, Louis-Philippe had fled and the opposition had formed a provisional government. The sketch is from the Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection at the Brown University Library, the foremost American collection devoted to the history and iconography of soldiers and soldiering, and one of the world’s largest collections devoted to the study of military and naval uniforms.
