Description
English: So-called Portrait of Francis I, Holy Roman Emperor (1708-1765), but is probably a depiction of Duke George Augustus of Mecklenburg (1748-1785), brother of Queen Charlotte.
  • Identification proposed by user Ecummenic (talk) (18 July 18 July 2022) based on the comparison with a portrait of George Augustus of Mecklenburg by Allan Ramsay (see image below) and the lack of physical resemblance with Emperor Francis.
"The identification of the sitter in this portrait as Francis is recorded on the frame. Estimating his age as less than thirty the date of the portrait would seem to be around the time of his marriage in 1736. The hair style seems more in keeping with the 1750s and the style of painting resembles that of Allan Ramsay during those years, so there may be a confusion with the identification." [1]
