Description
English: The Owen B. Augspurger Parking Ramp, 364 Pearl Street at West Huron Street, Buffalo, New York, January 2021. Named for a local attorney, businessman, and champion of downtown Buffalo's various mid-20th century redevelopment schemes who founded the Buffalo Civic Auto Ramps corporation, the original portion of the Augspurger Ramp (part of which is seen at extreme right) dates to 1983. However, most of what's in this photograph is a newer annex, erected in 2003 on the site of the Esenwein & Johnson-designed Hurst Building, then home of the local chapter of the Church of Scientology. By and large, the architecture is a very of-its-time rendition of late-period Postmodernism - the stylized columns interspersed between the bays of parking spaces attest to that - but, interestingly, you can also see influences of the 1940s- and '50s-era International Style in the curved corner façade and the narrow horizontal rows of windows above it.
