DescriptionAustralia's Red Centre (MODIS 2021-04-19).jpg |
English: Rusty-red sands of the Simpson Desert contrast with the green vegetation of the MacDonnell Ranges in southeastern Northern Territory, Australia. The folded sandstone and quartzite ridges stretch roughly 230 miles (380 km) wide and rise to over 4,000 feet (1,219 meters) high.
Alice Springs, the third-largest town in Northern Territory, sits on the eastern side of MacDonnell Ranges. This remote town is located roughly at Australia’s center and just south of the Tropic of Capricorn. The color of the soils surrounding Alice Springs and across the Simpson Desert give this region the nickname “Red Centre”. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of Australia’s Red Centre on April 14, 2021. |
