It is a busy, lively place, to which the costumes of theCroatian peasants (comp. p. 386) impart an interesting air of variety.The streets are narrow; the strong fortifications have been con-verted into promenades. A specialty of Zara is the manufacture ofRosolio Maraschino from cherries (marasca; comp. p. 400). Theliqueur is distilled in July, August, and September. On the W. side of the town, along the Canale di Zara, runs theRiva Francesco Giuseppe (Riva Nuova), an esplanade backed bylarge new buildings and forming the chief evening promenade ofthe townsfolk. A little to the E. is the Piazza delle Erbe (PI. A, 2).Straight on is the Archiepiscopal Palace (PL 1), behind it SanDonato (p. 390) and the cathedral (p. 391); to the left are an 390 Route 64. ZARA. 9th cent, on the site of the Roman forum, the pavement of whichnow forms the flooring of the church, and partly with the materialsof sundry Roman buildings. (Thus the stylobate or base of a templehas been brought to light.) The church is a round building in two Cathedral. ZARA. 64. Route, 391 stories, each with six pillars and two old marble columns, and isnow used as a Museum (adm. on application to the janitor in thePiazza delle Erbe, to the right of the Archiepiscopal Palace). Onthe groundfloor are architectural fragments and inscriptions. Theupper story contains relics of the pre-Roman (ornaments, bronzes,amber), the Roman (glass, terracotta, inscriptions), and the Lom-bard (fragments of sculpture) periods. The * Cathedral (SantfAnastasia; PL B, 2), a basilica inthe Romanesque style, begun on an earlier foundation in 1247 andconsecrated in 1285, has a facade of 1324, with four arcades andtwo rose-windows.
