Ce monument est un autel. Il était utilisé lors des sacrifices offerts à une divinité : les offrandes y étaient déposées puis brûlées. Une guirlande de fruits et d’épis de blé maintenue par deux rubans orne chaque face de l’autel ; elle est reliée, aux angles, à des visages. D’un côté de l’autel sont représentées deux têtes, celle d’un silène barbu et celle d’un satyre imberbe. Il s’agit de créatures à moitié animales, comme le prouvent leurs longues oreilles pointues. Ces êtres appartiennent au cortège qui accompagne le dieu grec Dionysos, dieu de la vigne et de l’ivresse, le Bacchus de la religion romaine. De l’autre côté de l’autel, on peut voir un homme âgé barbu coiffé d’une perruque de théâtre et un jeune homme imberbe, les cheveux attachés avec un bandeau. Leurs pupilles percées les rendent plus vivants. Ces masques rappellent que Dionysos est à l’origine du théâtre grec. Ce style de sculpture se retrouve dans les masques ornant le grand mausolée de Glanum, à Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Mis au jour dans le secteur actuel de la cathédrale, il laisse présumer qu’un culte à Bacchus existait en ce lieu à l’époque romaine. Le travail du sculpteur évoque le début de l’Empire. Bacchus y revêt alors des fonctions agraires plus importantes que Dionysos, divinité plus complexe et subversive. |
