Description
English: Built circa 1900, this Queen Anne-style building was built for Alva Wilcox, and was originally a mixed-use buildings with shops, offices, and apartments. The building features a buff brick exterior with red brick accents and trim, a mansard roof, oriel windows, some with octagonal hipped roofs, one-over-one windows, first floor former retail shopfronts with large plate glass windows, cast iron pilasters, and paneled entry doors, second story balconies with arched openings surrounded by rusticated stone and brick with engaged columns, stone sills and trim surrounds the windows, brick pilasters with corbeling, a front gable with the word “Avalon” on it and trim panels with festoons, a front entry door to the upper floors with an arched transom, rusticated brick and stone surround, and engaged columns, and a rear wood-frame addition. The building is a contributing structure in the Newark Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.
