Summary edit

Description
English: Avoncliff aqueduct Avoncliff aqueduct carries the Kennet and Avon canal across the River Avon. The canal arrives (right) from Bradford-on-Avon on the south side of the valley, turns sharp right across the aqueduct, then sharp left at the end to contour along the north side of the valley. 3 miles west, at Dundas, another aqueduct takes the canal back across the valley. The change is because the engineer John Rennie did not want to go too far up a side valley that comes in from the south, although a canal was subsequently built up that valley to serve the Somersetshire coal fields.

Although originally a stone structure, which is how it still appears in profile, the channel was extensively rebuilt in concrete in the 1970's with further work in the 1990's.

In this picture, about half of the aqueduct is in this grid square.
