Description

These Alpine cushion plants (Azorella compacta), locally known as llareta, are some of the weirdest Apiaceae I have ever seen.

  • The sap they produce smells a lot like pine resin, and is used locally to help ignite fires, as it is highly flammable.
  • I wonder if all those terpenes are functioning like a sort of antifreeze in the plant?
