| Description |
La Azucarera fue construída en 1899, su primera producción fue en 1901 y la última en 1903, año en que cerró, debido a la incapacidad del mercado español de absorber toda la producción de azúcar y otras circunstancias de la época. La Azucarera fue el motivo de que Portas tuviese ferrocarril durante décadas para desplazar la maquinaria procedente de Alemania desde los puertos de Vigo y Villagarcía hasta la propia fábrica. Estuvo en desuso durante años, hasta que el ayuntamiento compró las instalaciones para rehabilitarla, conservando la edificación original y darle un uso socio-cultural y lúdico. En la actualidad en la Azucarera se encuentran el centro de día, la "Galescola", la Sala de Exposiciones y el Auditorio Municipal. En la chimenea ahora podemos disfrutar de un estupendo "Mirador" desde el cual podemos ver varios municipios cercanos como Villagarcia, Caldas de Reis, Barro y Meis, por donde transcurre el Camino Portugués.
