Diagram of 51 lb 8 oz 1/2 charge Cordite cartridge Mk I, for British BL 9.2 inch Mk IX & Mk X naval and coast defence guns.
This cartridge is an example of the earlier type of "composite" cartridges made up of multiple sizes of Mk I Cordite, discontinued at time of publication.
Diameter 8.25 inches, length 32.5 inches.
Contained 49 lb 8 oz cordite Mk I size 44, 2 lb cordite Mk I size 3 3/4.


The advantage of composite cartridges was originally believed to be that this enabled a larger charge to be fired, increasing muzzle velocity, without increasing chamber pressure. Ballistics were also believed to vary less with change of temperature.
