Description
English: Carving knife and fork

Around 1690
London
Handles wrapped with silver sheet

The arms on the carving knife and fork are engraved within a diamond shaped shield or 'lozenge'. This is the device for the arms of a widow or spinster. Apart from pieces bearing dedications they are the only way of linking a piece directly to a woman. Married women rarely owned silver, which was usually passed down through the male line. We know that they were patrons because of goldsmiths' bills, inventories and letters. The 1693-8 client list of the engraver Benjamin Rhodes contains the names of fourteen women.
