Symbol of the Order of Santiago
English: Effigy of Don Garcia de Osorio

1499-1505
Alabaster
Spain, Toledo

This is a detail from the effigy of Don Garcia de Osorio, showing the symbol of the Order of Santiago. This combined order of religious and military was devoted to St. James and was founded in the 12th century. The lowest symbol of the cross resembles a sword blade and conveys the dual nature of the order.
