| Description |
English: Backakelda (for Hilton) The farmer (Hilton) told me that the name of this farm had been printed incorrectly on the maps and that there should not be a "y" on the end. It was pointed out that other placenames nearby ended in an "a" rather than "ay": Gangsta; Hanga; Howa. He was a really nice guy and knowledgeable about the influence of Old Norse on local place names. "Backa" can mean either "slope" or "bank of a stream" and both features are evident in the locality. The "kelda" component means "spring", and feature nearby on the maps. |
