The Chacma baboon is in danger of extinction
unless the public, tourists and conservationists
co-operate to protect them. In the Cape Peninsula,
baboons are a major attraction, amusing tourists
with their roadside antics. Unfortunately, because
people feed them, these baboons have changed
their feeding behaviour and prefer to take food from
humans. To feed a baboon is to sign its death
warrant, as sooner or later it will become a problem
and will have to be destroyed. This disturbs the social
structure and behaviour of the troop. A unique
fact about the Cape Point baboons is that they have
developed a taste for seafood, and have also been
known to suck or chew deposits of kaolin clay

when they have upset stomachs.
