The famous Baagh Bhairav Temple is located in the middle of the market at Kirtipur Danda, a place inhabited by Newari communities in Kirtipur Municipality. The temple is said to have been built in the 16th century, but is believed to have been founded by Shivadev III in 1156 BS. An inscription has been found stating that Patan Pimbahal Mahapat was renovated by Burma in 1571 BS despite the fact that the temple was not built with certainty. The roof of this very artistic temple is made of copper. Statues of various deities have been carved on the wooden pillars of this temple in a very artistic style. In the mouth of the idol of this temple, a statue in the shape of a Baag without tongue and teeth, a three-eyed Baagh Bhairav has been erected. Although the story of this temple is from Mahabharata, there are also pictures of Matrika Devi. The locals of Kirtipur worship this Baagh Bhairav as their presiding deity. The daily worship of this temple is done by people of Kushle caste and the custom of worshiping by Bada caste during Jatra is still maintained. Is a unique example of the Newari tradition. A procession is held in this temple every 12 months in the month of Bhadra. In this holy festival, Bhairav, Ganesh, Shiva, Vaishnavi, Bramhayani, Indrauni, Ganga, Kumari, Barahi, Kalika, Sinhini and Vyaghrini are crowned with 12 deities and dance is performed in traditional style. The people of Kirtipur consider this Baagh Bhairav as their deity. There are many other small temples in the premises of this temple such as Ganesh Temple, Narayan Temple, Sridhar Temple, Yamaleshwar Temple, Bhavani Shankar Temple, Shiva Vasuki Temple, Vishwakarma Temple, Mother Earth Temple, Indrayani Temple, Hanuman Pillar, Dharmastambha, Tulsimath, Ramchandra Temple , Hanuman Temple, Basahaharu, Nasadya, Dyopwa, Shifasadya etc. As this temple is located in a high part of the scenic area, the view of the valley is very beautiful and various mountains can be seen when the weather is clear.
