Description
  • Scope and content: Full caption reads as follows: Bakersfield on Highway 466. Private auto camp, better than the average. There are a score of private auto camps strung one after the other along this highway in the eight miles between Bakersfield and Edison. There were 30 agricultural labor families in this camp, on and off relief. Ten of these have lived here more than a year continuously. They pay four dollars per month for space to put a tent or trailer. Gas costs $1.50 per month, and electricity an additional $1.50 per month. They pay $10 per month for the rent of a tent with wooden floors, wooden sides, and furnished with gas and electricity. There are 8 toilets, 2 showers, 1 washing machine. Laundry tubs. Practically all these families have lived in this before. These camps also serve as housing for families with members continuously employed in the vicinity. In this camp were two families with year-round employment.
