Um die Stellung der in unmittelbarer Nähe liegende Schaumburg (flickr.com/photos/poly-image/8621867592) zu schwächen, ließ Balduin von Luxemburg, Erzbischof von Trier 1320 die Burg Balduinstein errichten und übergab sie dem Ritter Dietrich von Staffel. Dieses Geschlecht baute die Burg in den nächsten Jahrhunderten immer weiter aus, doch Anfang des 17 Jhd begann der Verfall und der Kurfürst von Trier erteilte am Ende des dreißigjährigen Krieges die Abbruchgenehmigung. Anfang der 18 Jhd. standen dann nur noch Teile der Aussenmauern.
