Description
English: the baptism of the artist’s oldest son Fritz on February 10, 1879. Prussia’s Crown Princess Victoria – the daughter of England’s Queen Victoria – and Prussian Postmaster General Heinrich von Stephan served as godmother and godfather. Werner’s well-appointed Berlin villa on Potsdamer Strasse and its “red salon” [roter Salon] are shown here (his studio was on the second floor). The artist himself is also featured, as is his friend, the painter Ludwig Knaus (1829-1910), who appears in the background. The smiling crown princess holds the child in her arms, while her husband, Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm (the future Kaiser Friedrich III), stands at center right (with full beard, holding his helmet).
Deutsch: Dieses Gemälde stammt von Anton von Werner (1843-1915), dem herausragenden Maler historischer Porträts und Panoramabilder der Hohenzollerndynastie. Es zeigt die Taufe seines ältesten Sohnes Fritz am 10. Februar 1879. Preußens Kronprinzessin Victoria – die Tochter der englischen Königin Victoria – und der preußische Generalpostmeister Heinrich von Stephan fungierten als Paten. Abgebildet sind hier Werners gut ausgestattete Berliner Villa an der Potsdamer Straße und deren „roter Salon“ (sein Atelier befand sich im zweiten Stock). Der Künstler selbst kommt in dem Bild auch vor, ebenso wie sein Freund, der Maler Ludwig Knaus (1829-1910), der im Hintergrund erscheint. Die lächelnde Kronprinzessin hält das Kind in den Armen, während ihr Mann, Kronprinz Friedrich Wilhelm (der zukünftige Kaiser Friedrich III.) in der Bildmitte rechts steht (mit Vollbart und Helm in der Hand).
