In 2015, the most common non-English language spoken in Essex County, NJ was Spanish. 17.2% of the overall population of Essex County, NJ are native Spanish speakers. 2.73% speak Portuguese and 2.08% speak French Creole, the next two most common languages. When compared to other counties, Essex County, NJ has a relatively high number of residents that are native Portuguese speakers. In 2015, there were 21,785 native Portuguese speakers living in Essex County, NJ, approximately 12.88 times more than would be expected based on the language's frequency in the US more broadly. |
