Presentation Address BY The HonorableWilliam Howard Taft WHEN we read of the origin of Lin-coln, the squalor of his early sur-roundings, the ignorance and shift-less character of his father, and have so littleknowledge of the traits and intelligence of hismother, it seems as difficult to explain what hedid, what he was, and what he is now in theestimate of his countrymen and of the world,as it is to reconcile the origin and education ofShakespeare and his immortal plays. Yet,when we follow Lincolns life closely, andwhen we accompany this by a study of thepolitics of the period in which he lived, we findthe clue. As we look back now, no matterwhat men then said, no matter what issuesthey then framed, slavery was the disease fromwhich the nation was suffering, and until by 33 34 BARNARDS LINCOLN a capital operation that was removed, all hopeof progress, all hope of successful continuanceof popular government was impossible.
