| Description |
English: Barton Turn Lock, Trent and Mersey Canal, Staffordshire. Barton Turn Lock lowers the water level by 5ft 8in (1.7 metres). The lock is the tenth of seventy-six on the 93.5 mile course of the Trent and Mersey Canal. Fully opened by 1777, it took eleven years to build, initially engineered by James Brindley. The section from Derwent Mouth through Barton (and Burton!) as far as Shugborough was up and operating by 1770. |
