Description

Basalt from the Quaternary of Utah, USA. (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

This is a surface sample from a basalt lava flow in Utah's Black Rock Desert. The rock has been oxidized during weathering to a dark brown color.

Accompanying exhibit signage refers to this specimen as "pahoehoe lava" (pronounced "pa-hoy-hoy"). Pahoehoe was originally a Hawaiian word, but is now an English word in geology. Pahoehoe lava flows have smooth or ropy top surfaces. This sample has numerous twisted ridges.

Locality: lava flow near Ice Springs Crater, Black Rock Desert, west of the town of Fillmore, eastern Millard County, western Utah, USA
