Description
English:
Batthyány-Mausoleum in Kerepesi Cemetery. Planned by Albert Schickedanz. Built in between 1872 and 1874 in neo-renaissance style. Due to ambitious ideas and insufficient national giving, an unfinished monumental work was created. From the first terrace the entrances to the tombs open. The main staircase leading to the upper terrace is accompanied by a parapet on two sides, the rear side of the terrace is closed by a wall structure shaped like a retaining wall. Behind the arched retaining wall, an artificial hill was erected, surrounded by tombs. On the upper terrace a bench lined with an articulated cornice runs around, the main ledge is crowned by an ornamental stone railing. Count Lajos Batthyány de Németújvár was executed on October 6, 1849, and was secretly buried in the crypt of the Franciscan Church of Pest. In 1870 he was reburied in a simple tomb of the Kerepesi cemetery. Re-reburied in 1874. In the 1980s and 1990s, the tomb was robbed twice, and once Batthyány's body was mutilated. The mausoleum was restored/completed in 2000, when parts were placed on it that Schikendanz had wanted earlier (stone lions, obelisks, CoA reliefs). The building is under monument protection. Inside: the coffin of prime minister Count Lajos Batthyány, on top of which there is a carved book with the inscription of the 'Law Book'; on the opposite side, on the left, is Batthyány's son Elemér (1847 -1932), In a small coffin rests his granddaughter Lea Beniczky (1880-1883), and on the right his daughter Ilona (1842-1829). At the back, under the arch, is the coffin of his wife Antonia Zichy (1816-1888) - Photo taken on Budapest100 'Architectural values of the Fiumei Road graveyard' guided walk. - Kerepesi Cemetery at Fiumei Road, Kerepesdűlő neighbourhood, 8th district of Budapest.
Magyar:
Belül: gróf Batthyány Lajos első felelős miniszterünk koporsója, mely tetején egy faragott könyv látható, melynek felírata törvény könyv; a szemközti oldalon látható balra Elemér fia (1847 -1932), elöl kis koporsóban unokája Beniczky Lea (1880-1883), jobb oldalon leánya Ilona (1842 - 1829) nyugszik. Hátul a boltív alatt felesége Zichy Antónia (1816-1888) koporsója van. 'Batthyány-mauzóleum' műemléki azonosító: 929, törzsszám: 15633. - Temető tervezője: Schickedanz Albert.
