Battle of Jersey, Royal Square, St Helier. Near the statue to George II there is this paving slab with the inscription:
The Battle of Jersey
was fought in the Royal Square
formerly the Market Place
on the sixth of January 1781

French forces attempted to seize Jersey as the island was used by British privateers threatening American shipping during the American Revolutionary War.

France was an ally of the United States
