The rock, before which Moses is here representedwith his people around him, proved to be a memo-rable place in the Hebrew annals, and one of deepand melancholy interest in the life of the Hebrewchief It was here that he buried Miriam, his pro-phetic sister, in the sands of the desert; and it washere the decree was pronounced against himself,that for his mistrust and petulance, through whichhe had failed to sanctify the Lord in the sight ofthe children of Israel, he should not be permittedto lead them in to possess the promised land, to-wards which their march was directed. This pointof their ancient history deserves attention, from thefrequency with which it is alluded to, both in theOld and the New Testament. It leads forward themind also to religious thoughts, that are distinctfrom the literal story, but most naturally suggestedby it.
