Summary edit

Description
English: Bell Pit, Fore Wood The shallow depression in the ground is a man made pit dug to locate seams of iron ore that run underneath the clay. Evidence of iron working in this wood and date back to pre-Roman times, whilst the Romans themselves extensively mined and produced iron in this part of the Weald. Bloomeries have been discovered in nearby Crowhurst and Beauport Parks. Fore Wood is littered with these depressions and a few remaining slag heaps though much was removed during the 18th century when nearby turnpikes were constructed.
