| Description |
English: Bell pit, Wilsontown. The woods around Wilsontown and Forth in Lanarkshire cover a lost industrial landscape. Before the railways the iron ore and coal here led to Scotland's first integrated iron works. Sadly the isolation restricted growth and by the time the railway arrived the industrial revolution had moved on. The forest is full of these depressions which were coal pits accessing seams near the surface. The remaining coal is now being extracted by opencast methods to the north. |
