AKMY SIGNAL CORPS PHOTOS TuREE-ixcH Anti-Aircrait Gvx A WAR GAME TEST OF TELEPHONE SERVICE sirens, bells, blinking street lights and other methods of sig-naling the townspeople that all lights must be extinguished.The warning at Deep Run was given by a citizen who blewon a fox horn which was reported not only to have been suc-cessful as a signal to the neighbors as far as three miles awaybut also to have drawn an enthusiastic response from theCarolina hound dogs in the vicinity. In some communitiesthe power companies, after several warning blinks, cut offthe power. The Blackout lasted until 7:47 p.m., whenthe order Lights on was transmitted from Fort Bragg inthe same way. The speed with which the telephone network functioned intransmitting the Blackout order is shown by the fact thatthe average elapsed time on 76 long distance telephone calls to49 towns and on 22 local calls in five towns was less than halfa minute. In handling these 98 calls, an average of less than30 seconds
