Karl Benz & Co, Mannheim, Germany, early dogcart of 1900 powered by a simple engine. Karl Friedrich Benz (1844–1929) was a German engine designer and car engineer, generally regarded as the inventor of the petrol-powered automobile and together with Bertha Benz (1849-1944) pioneering founder of the automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. Bertha was Karl’s wife and business partner; in 1888 she was the first person to drive an automobile over a long distance. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Benz The now closed Museum of Science and Industry, was in a building on Newhall Street, Birmingham, previously the Elkington Silver Electroplating Works. It became the science museum of Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery in 1951 until its closure in 1997.
