Summary edit
DescriptionBeschrijving van Japan - ABC (cropped).jpg |
English: From Dutch translation of Engelbert Kaempfer: The History of Japan (1727). Listing firo-canna (modern romanisation: Hiragana) and catta-canna (modern romanisation: Katakana), alongside "imatto-canna" (mostly variant kana, or "Hentaigana", mistaken as a congruent syllabary). Two rows of right-to-left columns, top comes before bottom. Written out using Japanese consonant ordering but Roman vowel ordering. Each column is written in right-to-left columns of Hiragana, then Katakana, then "imatto" kana, and romanisation (which differs from modern romanisations in places) last (leftmost) of all. |

Column of various alternate kana (mainly what would now be called hentaigana) titled "Imatto Canna", apparently a mangling of "jamatto canna" (yamatogana, i.e. Japanese kana). Kaempfer incorrectly thought that there was a third homologous syllabary.
European order of vowels (AEIOU), this makes the order within a column different from the native Japanese gojūon (AIUEO), though the consonant order is Japanese.
Furthermore, this appears to the left of the character images, despite the columns being right to left.
Romanisation at the "e" locus given as "je" (i.e. "ye"), same as at the "ye" locus.
Hiragana and Katakana "we" at the "e" locus – suggesting that they were already homophones.
Hiragana and Katakana "wo" at the "o" locus.
Modern Hiragana "o" (the modern Katakana "o" seems not to appear).
U+1B001 "HIRAGANA LETTER ARCHAIC YE" (alias "HENTAIGANA LETTER E-1"), appropriately at the "ye" locus.
Modern Katakana "e" at the "ye" locus.
Character resembling, but a shade more complex than, the modern Hiragana "e" at the "we" locus – compare with the "we" kana at the "e" locus.
Possibly U+1B000 "KATAKANA LETTER ARCHAIC E" at the "we" locus.
"Wo" locus seems to duplicate "o" locus.
Regular script
Small seal script (小篆)
Ninefold seal script (九疊文)
Cursive (grass) script (草書)
Apparently U+1B098 "HENTAIGANA LETTER NE-KO" at the Katakana "ne" locus.
