As soon as the sun was up the heatbegan; as soon as the moon arose it was bitter cold.And then the dreariness of the absolutely level plain.What a joy it was to see the hills rising before us. Inmarching from Babylonia toward the west the sightof the hills meant home, safety, comfort, things towhich we were used. But all that is pictured in thepilgrim Psalms of the Hebrews, 120-134. Each isheaded, you remember, Song of degrees,—at leastthat is the heading in the King James Version,—whichmeans song of going up, pilgrim song. Listen and see how the first of those Psalms tells ofconditions such as I have described:
