Description

Entrance No. 6 to the building at Güterstraße 4-10 in Bienne/Biel, according to plans by architect B. Clottu, was completed in 1944. The entrances are repeated in their basic form: cheeks on the sides, which serve as windbreaks and look like flanking columns to the outside, and a stylised entablature frame the entrance. The framing is supported by an ornamental frieze that runs rectangularly to the side and above the double-leaf entrance door and consists of tiles with gold-coloured floral vines on a light blue background. Above the lintel, inscriptions in various languages attest to the end of the construction period. The entrance area is sheltered by a generously projecting thin stone slab, which protects those entering from the rain. In the middle of the floor slab is a metal grate, probably inserted later, through which shaken-off water or snow is caught. The two door leaves consist of a metal frame with a glazed panel that allows a view both inside and outside. Round metal bars run diagonally downwards from the closing edge so that even small children can open the door leaf. The inscriptions on the architrave-like lintel with its flat face and rounded edge to the underside bears the inscription in gold letters in raised relief. In the case of this entrance, it is 6 and, in smaller letters, ANNO on the left and the Roman number MDCCCCXLIV (1944, the end of the construction period) on the right next to the house number.

The building at Güterstraße 4-10 in Biel/Bienne, designed by architect B. Clottu, was completed in 1944. It commemorates the close friendship between the two cities of Biel and Vienna. The architect alludes to the formal language of the Karl Marx Hof in Vienna, for example, with the tower-like elevations with the flagpoles.
