rs. The birds may besaid to have conquered Madison. In Stamford the local secretary presentedtwo libraries to the different schools. Shesays: Principal, teachers and scholars alikeforward in every way Audubon work bytheir enthusiasm and earnestness, the resultbeing 1,476 new junior or associate mem-bers. Our Hartford secretary says, Ifpeople only knew what a pleasure it is totalk to the enthusiastic little children, more would go to work in the publicschools. The path is all smoothed forus by the very charming principals andteachers; and the children themselves dohalf the talking, and would do it all, ifone did not want a little say ones self. Added to this educational work, theSociety has posted the state game laws inforty towns, in all express offices, and inone hundred and twenty-six summer hotels, and is now contemplating putting them insaloons, thinking that some would see themin that way who would not perhaps noticethem elsewhere. Respectfully submitted,Helen W. Glover, Secretary.

BLUEBIRD AT NESTPhotographed from nature by A. L. Princehorn. Glen Island, N. Y. i6irli = £ore A BI-MONTHLY MAGAZINEDEVOTED TO THE STUDY AND PROTECTION OF BIRDS Official Organ of the Audubon Societies Vol. V March — April, 1903 No. 2 A Sierra Nighthawk Family BY FLORENCE MERRIAM BAILEY NEAR our camp on the crest of the Sierra Nevada above DonnerLake, when moving our pack-train from one of the narrowstreaks of grass between the timber and rock of the summitacross a bare granite ridge to another patch of feed, we happened on afamily of Nighthawks. The two old birds had been seen here before, beaten back by the wind which swept fiercely over the bleak northernridge; and now, as we crossed a shelf of rock and gravel, with only hereand there a lone pine or hemlock, the brooding bird sprang from underthe bell-mares feet, trailing off in distress. At first sight she looked as big as a Grouse, and when second glanceproved her a Nighthawk I was puzzled to tell what there was about hertrailin
