1 * MALE WRY-BILL PLOVER STANDING NEAR EGGSThe picture shows the nature of the Shingle beds photographs, their color protection is of an order seldom met with evenamong birds eggs. The bird was very courageous, and, unlike most of the Plover family,made no attempt to lure us away from her treasures by shamming, but rantoward us with wings outspread and feathers erect, making a low, angrypurring noise. She came within four or five feet of us at times, her indig-nation at our intrusion being augmented, no doubt, by the fact that hereggs were just hatching, both shells being chipped. During the time westayed by the nest we did not see the male bird at all. I do not rememberthat the female rose from the ground once. As I had not my camera withme, we went back to camp, returning early next morning to photograph our

Still there was no sign of her mate, and it was not until I had photo-graphed her on the nest, and near it, that his lordship put in an appearance.She was on the eggs at the time, and he ran straight up to her with a greatshow of authority and drove her off, chasing her away from the nest. Heevidently wanted her to go away and feed, for, when she flew about twentyyards and then settled, he ran after her, and then she flew away off downstream. Then he returned to the nest, and, sitting on the eggs, noticed usapparently for the first time. However, he did not seem to be as interestedin us as we were in him, and heshuffled round on the eggs trying toget comfortably settled, while we yotready to photograph him.
