t seen the Avadavat. It was not in the boxwith the Canary. Changing birds about from place to place at this timeof the year renders them liable to a chill. Cordon-blues, Firefiuches, and Golden-breasted Wax-bills are not delicate birds if they are not exposed toinfection in dealers dirty shops or in an infected aviary.I have kept these species out for two summers and twowinters. They are very susceptible to some of the infectiousdiseases of birds but not more so than mauj of our Britishbirds. Cold of itself does not cause disease ; but changeableweather especially from a dry cold or heat to wet is a verygreat predisposing factor. This is not peculiar to birds asall animals are influenced in tlie same manner. Give any bird suitable food, suitable shelter, plenty ofroom in which to take exercise, and a clean or dry groundsurface, and I believe it will maintain itself in health in ourchangeable climate.
