My new mother thoughtI had something in my throat and gaveme some water. The next afternoon shefound me on the floor panting, took me toan open window, gave me wine and theattack seemed to pass. We went up toour room, and apparently I was as wellas ever when she went down to dinner.After she had gone another attack cameon and I am too weak to write any more,and can only warn little birds never totaste of a Christmas rose, as they are saidto be deadly poison. The typical form of this owl (Surniaulula) is a native of Scandinavia andNorthern Russia, and incidentally is avisitor to Western Alaska. We are toldby Mr. L. M. Turner, who was stationedby the United States Signal Service inAlaska from 1874 to 1881, that the na-tives assert that this form is a resident,and breeds in the vicinity of St. Michaels ;also that it is a coast bird, i. e., not goingfar into the interior, and that it can livea long time in winter without food, as itremains for days in the protection of theholes about the tangled roots of the wil-low and alder patches. Its true breed-ing range, however, is the northern por-tion of the Eastern hemisphere. It issomewhat larger and lighter in color thanthe American Hawk Owl.
