sland, the west. Gem of the Inland Sea? A summers outing has come to be a —Illyria Turner. THE MOUNTAIN FORGET-ME-NOT. Gods thought is in the mountain; He plants His beauty thereIn each cool-flowing fountain, In every blossom fair. This dainty flower is hidden; It loves its lonely lot,For one will stop sometime and say, Lo! God forgets me not. It gazes on the deep blue sky, It scans the old suns face; Each lends a glimpse of color and A touch of Natures grace. No skill can paint its beautys hue; No artist can replaceThe blossom torn with ruthless hand From Natures fond embrace. This is my native rock-bound home, I give you welcome here; But bear me not to other climes, Nor deem these regions drear. For here, though snows may gird me round And dwarf with wintry chill,The sun shines bright with summer light, And starts each sparkling rill. Then pluck me not from my mountain rock Beside the streamlet clear.Revere the beauties Nature placed, Love me and leave me here. —Ada M. Griggs. 80

The stones represented in the accom-panying colored plate have, for the mostpart, but limited use, either becauseof their local occurrence or their lackof special gem qualities. Three of themare peculiar to the United States, anddeserve on that account perhaps to bebetter known and more widely used byour people. These are variscite, chlor-astrolite and thomsonite. VARISCITE. Variscite resembles turquois in manyproperties, being, like that mineral, a gen-erally opaque, hydrous phosphate ofaluminum not occurring in distinctcrystals. Its color is, however, normallyan apple-green to emerald-green, ratherthan blue, and its luster is more nearlyvitreous than that of turq
