coffee house was opened inLondon in 1652, by a Greek, named Pas-quet. This Greek was the servant of anEnglish merchant, named Edwards, whobrought some coffee with him fromSmyrna, and whose house, when the factbecame known, was so thronged withfriends and visitors who wished to tastethe new beverage, that, to relieve himselffrom annoyance, Edwards established hisservant in a coffee house.
