Description

The former Birdsisle House after it was bombed in 1940. It originally dated back to at least the 16th century, and was converted around 1897 by Joseph Robert Diggle J.P., and re-named St Michael's Grange. It was purchased by headmaster H.F. Varley during World War I, and became Asheton Grange School, for boys aged 8 to 18. The school closed in 1930. It became a rehabilitation home for unemployed men, then a home for children with special needs. The building was destroyed by a German bomb in 1940, and a smaller building now stands in its place.

Note: An exhaustive search has been made, via libraries, archives, books, magazines, postcard collections, the internet etc., to discover the identity of the author. None has been found.
