Photographer
State Government Photographer
Title
Birkenhead Wharf - Port Adelaide
Description

The image shows horse drawn drays laden with bags of grain waiting to be loaded onto ships tied up at Birkenhead Wharf in March 1917. A brief strike by casual wheat stackers had delayed loading for several days the previous month (Register, 8 February 1917, p7). The work was dangerous and accidents occurred at times (e.g. Daily Herald, 20 February 1917, p3). There is a similar image from a different angle at SLSA BPRG280/1/12/187.

(Microfiche incorrectly states Ref. 395 and the date as August./The negatives are dated 8-3-1917, not August. The glass plate negatives are in Box 393, not 395. (G Brooks))
