English: Birth of the Buddha Shakyamuni. Pakistan (ancient region of Gandhara), Kushan period, ca. 2nd century. Stone, H. 6 15/16 in. ; W. 7 3/4 in. This panel, together with the one showing Maya's dream (Dream of Queen Maya. Gandhara.Met.jpg), was part of a larger set that would have sequentially encircled the drum of a small stupa to recount the life of the Buddha. Here, Maya reaches up to grasp a branch of a tree, much like earlier representations of yakshis (female nature deities), and miraculously gives birth to the Buddha out of her right side.

Ce panneau, avec celui montrant le rêve de Maya (Dream of Queen Maya. Gandhara.Met.jpg), faisait partie d'un ensemble plus vaste qui aurait initialement encerclé, une séquence après l'autre, le tambour d'un petit stupa en racontant la vie du Bouddha Shakyamuni. Ici, Maya se dresse et saisit une branche d'arbre, un peu comme des représentations antérieures de yakshis ( divinités de la nature féminine ), et elle donne miraculeusement naissance à Bouddha par le côté droit . |
