Da, wo niederes, mit Schlingpflanzen dicht durchwobenes Buschwerk die Graswüste ab- wechselt, ist das Dorado kleiner, aalglatt be- schuppter Eidechsen aus der Gattung Mabuia. Diese beweglichen Tierchen sind von lang- gestreckter Körperform und besitzen sehr kleine Füßchen, eine Körperbeschaffenheit, die für ihre schleichende und schlüpfende Fort- bewegungsart spricht. Teils kriechend, teils laufend durchfurchen sie den mehlfeinen Sand, teils kletternd, teils schlüpfend bohren sie sich durch das Gewirr der Schlingpflanzen. Ihre Färbung besteht aus einem mehr oder minder dunklem Braun, das am Rücken von helleren Längsstreifen durchschnitten wird. Soviel ich beobachten konnte, nähren sie sich von Ameisen, Blattkäfern und ähnlichen Kerfen. Nicht einmal zur Nachtzeit ruht das Repti- lienleben in der Savanne. Wieder ist es der Steppenvater Baobab, in dessen Falten und Ritzen mit Eintritt der Dunkelheit reges Leben und Treiben beginnt. Es sind große Geckonen, vorwiegend lichtscheue Klettereidechsen, die den größten Teil des Tages in dunklen Ritzen und Spalten zubringen und erst nach Sonnenunter- als ich es plötzlich aus den Augen verlor, und gang recht mobil werden. Nebst der auf den trotz gründlichen Suchens gelang es mir erst Kap Verdischen Inseln heimischen Tarentola nach langer Zeit, das Tierchen, das noch am gigantea zählt diese Art Tarentola ephippiata nämlichen Platze saß, wieder aufzufinden. zu den Riesenformen ihrer Gattung.
