Description
English: Black Bryony (Tamus communis), Warren House Gill. Black Bryony is Britain's only member of the Dioscoreaceae or Yam family, which has a number of tropical climbing species some with large edible tubers. The root of our plant is black but the berries are bright red and many parts of the plant are poisonous http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/b/brybla75.html#med The plant is an indicator species for natural woodland and scrub-land on Magnesian Limestone and is at its most northerly part of its British distribution on the Durham coast.
