Summary edit

Description
English: Bloomsbury: Orde Hall Street, WC1 This unusual (in the sense of using buff coloured bricks in this area of London) terrace of Victorian houses appears genteel enough, but a search on the street name in the archives of "The Times" reveals that the female residents had a somewhat unsavoury reputation.

In 1907 a resident of Orde Hall Street was accused of "using insulting language whereby a breach of the peace might be occasioned" to a police constable when he arrested her for annoying a gentleman in Piccadilly Circus by placing herself in front of him, and later stopping two others.

In 1918 a "fahionably dressed woman" was sentenced to three months imprisonment with hard labour for using premises in the street as a brothel, and in 1936 a widowed resident was accused of murder, later reduced to manslaughter, and attempting to procure an abortion, following the death of a young woman.
