Summary edit
DescriptionBoat (3730063798).jpg |
From Valletta, the traditional Maltese 'dghajsa' boat is always available for tours in the Grand Harbour. A leisurely way of enjoying oneself especially in the summer months when the weather is good. One of the commonest pastimes found among the residents of the coastline. The boatman is returning home after having a quite time moving leisurely on the limpid blue sea. The sea craft is one of the commonest small craft found on the island; small and easily manageable. In the past such boats were used to ferry people from the incoming ships or from one side of the Grand Harbour to the other. These boats had their heyday during the time of The British when they continuously ferried sailors from boat to shore and vice versa. Nowadays their use is restricted but the Authorities have launched a ferry service from Valletta to Sliema and the Three Cities, it has become a popular way of leisurely crossing the Grand Harbour. In our days they are mainly used by enthusiasts who like nothing else than being away from all the hassle of everyday life into a world of relaxed fishing. It is a simple craft powered by a small outboard engine and an awning to keep the boatman out of the sun’s glare and afford a breeze to further cool down the boatman. The boat’s small size is highlighted when contrasted with the bare rocky shore line and the deep blue sea. He might not have done anything extraordinary, just cruising about, but the pleasure of being in his own ‘world’ is enough, he is out there at one with nature - MALTA |
